Course Objectives and Description:

Discussion of different core strategies and their effect on respiration, relaxation, spinal elongation and functional joint centration during static and dynamic loading.

A brief review of sagittal stabilization, working in open and closed kinetic chains, and ipsilateral and contralateral patterns. Correcting dysfunctional patterns with coordinated co-contraction of antagonists and functional respiration to improve dance, yoga and pilates postures.  Emphasize the importance of support as well as relaxation in movement patterns.

Discuss the difference between a “developmental” supine triple flexed position and a “visual” triple flexed position, and the implications on centration and activation of the intrinsic spinal stabilization system.

Become comfortable in understanding cervical spine and scapular stabilization using concepts of loading and centration, and using DNS neurodevelopmental principles to improve “port de bra” positioning.
Using DNS active exercise positions to centrate the foot (correcting sickling and winging), knee and hip and to coordinate muscles in the pelvic girdle and lower extremities.

Explore how to avoid over-activation of the hip flexors using DNS locomotor patterns while at the same time improving turn out through hip joint centration, thereby correcting hip impingement issues.

Review the neurodevelopmental aspects  and foot and hand support of various yoga asanas- downward dog, triangle and cobra.

Brief introduction to integrate the use of DNS principles and developmental positions into interactive flow sequences, known as  “DNS Flow”.
