Course Objectives:
Introduction to DNS principles and Developmental Kinesiology (DK) - relevance for Pilates instructors.
Summary of philosophies of Joseph Pilates and similarities to DK – e.g. upright spine, physiological breathing, “core” stabilization.
Understanding relationship between development during the first year of life and dysfunction of the movement system in adulthood, including common postural and breathing dysfunctions.
Discussion and demonstration of the foundations of human movement: postural support, stepping forward, biomechanics of motor function, the process of verticalization, and functional joint centration in postural development.
Evaluation and correction of poor respiratory patterns, and instruction in proper breathing techniques through both isolated and integrated DNS and Pilates exercises.
Understanding sagittal stabilization and assessment of the Integrated Spinal Stabilization System (ISSS), both visually and using DNS functional tests.
Integrate DNS tests into pre-Pilates exercises and instruction.
Use of Pilates equipment to facilitate proper motor learning of global movement patterns.
Exercises to enhance movement awareness, motor control, coordination, and range of motion.
Achieving optimal movement parameters: support, stride, biomechanics of movement functions, trunk stabilization and functional joint centration.
Selecting appropriate equipment and exercises to influence stability or mobility in specific body segments for clients or patients.
Identifying the functional threshold of a given exercise. Setting resistances and selecting equipment for modification, intensity and difficulty of the exercise.
