Pilates DNS Course Objectives:

•    Introduction to DNS neuro-physiologic principles with relevance for Pilates instructors, and how the combined philosophies can enhance program design and progression.
•    Discuss developmental kinesiology during the first year of life and the dysfunctions that may arise in adulthood.
•    Explain and demonstrate the process of locomotion and verticalization utilizing the concept of functional joint centration and support function.
•    Understand the importance of sagittal stabilization and the assessment of the integrated stabilizing system of the spine (ISSS), utilizing DNS functional tests.
•    Understand the undifferentiated (homologous) and differentiated (ipsilateral, contralateral) movement patterns
•    Evaluate and correct poor respiratory patterns and instruct correct respiration principles in isolated and integrated DNS and Pilates exercises.
•    Integrate developmental exercises into corresponding Pilates exercises (supine, prone, side lying, low kneeling, quadruped, bear and squat positions) while maintaining joint centration through the entire kinetic chain, adapting (verbal and tactile cues) from a DNS perspective
•    Explore exercise progressions utilizing Pilates apparatus– including the possibility of semi closed/open kinetic chain exercises and the influence of Pilates apparatus on the kinetic chains.
